The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police authorities have apprehended 15 suspects in connection with the looting of a warehouse situated in the Tasha area of Abuja, owned by the Federal Capital Territory Department of Agriculture.
The incident, where residents looted the warehouse, occurred on Sunday morning, prompting swift action from law enforcement.
In an official statement, the FCT Police Command confirmed its awareness of the impulsive attack on the Agric Department Strategic food store, emphasizing that normalcy has been restored to the area.
The situation is now under control, with 15 suspects in custody, including two local security guards employed by the warehouse management.
Recovered exhibits from the suspects include 26 bags of maize, five motorcycles, and vandalized aluminum roofings.
The looting incident coincides with ongoing economic challenges in Nigeria, marked by high inflation rates, which reached 29.90 percent in January.
President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end the fuel subsidy and float the naira further aggravated the situation, leading to protests in various parts of the country.
The Federal Government implemented measures to alleviate the impact of the reforms, including palliatives.
However, these efforts seem insufficient, as demonstrated by recent protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the government’s handling of the situation.
President Tinubu, while urging patience for the reforms to take root, remains resolute in his commitment to the implemented changes, emphasizing that there is no turning back on the reforms.
