Nigeria’s Flying Eagles bounced back from the disappointment of losing their first game 2-1 against Uganda to secure a 1-0 win over South Sudan in Group B of the African Games men’s football event Monday evening in Accra, Ghana.
After a goalless first half and despite being under pressure, Sadiq Isyaka converted a penalty in the 80th-minute to ensure a 1-0 win for Nigeria, elevating the Flying Eagles to second spot in the group standings behind Uganda who lead after a 1-0 win over Senegal in an earlier encounter.
It was the second win for the Hippos after initially edging Nigeria 2-1 in their first game on Thursday.
Youngster Allan Oyirwoth scored the only goal of the game to send Uganda into the semi finals of the tournament for the first time since 1999 when they finished fourth.
Oyirwoth scored in the 58th minute with a rebound after his penalty had been saved.
Meanwhile, in the women’s category, the Falconets of Nigeria qualified for the semi finals with a commanding 4-0 win over Senegal.
Loveth Edeh, Motunrayo Ezekiel and Chioma Olise all scored for Nigeria while Senegal also conceded an own goal as the Falconets dominated the game.
Under the tutelage of coach Christopher Danjuma, the Nigerian girls kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Friday.
The win over Senegal gave them six points from two games, helped Nigeria top the group and advance to the semi finals
