The Ogun State House of Assembly ratified the impeachment of former speaker Olakunle Oluomo on Tuesday, with unanimous support from all 22 members present during the plenary session.
Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, presiding over the session, oversaw the reading of the committee report led by Musefiu Lamidi, which investigated allegations against Oluomo.
Lamidi clarified that the committee aimed for a fair hearing rather than a witch hunt.
Despite Oluomo’s objection to some committee members participating due to their involvement in the impeachment notice, the committee found him guilty of all allegations and recommended his impeachment.
Lamidi then moved the motion for the adoption of the report, seconded by Oluseun Adesanya.
The resolution, affirming Oluomo’s removal through a majority vote, was endorsed by the 22 attending members.
Subsequently, Adegoke Adeyanju nominated Oludaisi Elemide as the new speaker, seconded by Adeniran Ademola.
Elemide officially took the Oath of Office, assuming the role of the new speaker.
In his inaugural address, he pledged an all-inclusive leadership, emphasizing unity among members for the state’s progress.
The impeachment process was initiated with a letter signed by 25 out of the 26 House of Assembly members, as read by the deputy speaker earlier.
