Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali is doubtful for Nigeria’s upcoming friendly matches with Ghana and Mali after sustaining an injury while playing for his club.
Sports Gister reports that Nwabali sustained a suspected knee injury during the South African Premier Soccer League match between his club Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. He was forced off the pitch in the 73rd minute of the game which ended in a 2-0 win for PSL table toppers, Mamelodi Sundowns.
The extent of Nwabali’s injury will be assessed in the coming days, casting doubt on his availability for the friendlies.
The goalkeeper who was outstanding for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which ended a month ago, was the first name on the list of 27 players invited for the friendly matches on Saturday.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Ghana at the Stade de Marrakech on March 22, followed by a friendly against Mali at the same venue four days later.
If Nwabali does not recover in time, the Super Eagles will prosecute the games with the duo of Francis Uzoho and Ojo Olorunleke, along with any other goalkeeper the Nigeria Football Federation calls up to the squad.
