Team Nigeria has continued to dominate the weightlifting event at the on-going 2023 African Games in Accra, Ghana as two lifters won six more gold medals on Tuesday.
Ruth Ayodele claimed three gold medals in the 64kg category while Joy Eze did likewise in the 71kg class.
Ayodele is making her debut while Eze who moved to a new weight category is competing in her second African Games.
Ayodele won gold in snatch, clean and jerk and total.
She lifted 94kg in snatch, 144kg in clean and jerk and a total of 208kg to claim all the three gold medals at stake.
Eze lifted 90kg in snatch, 117kg in clean and jerk and a total of 207kg.
The six gold medals made it a total of 15 gold won by Nigerian weightlifters in Accra.
The trio of Adijat Olarinoye in 55kg, Rafiatu Lawal in 59kg and Edidiong Umoafia in 67kg won three gold medals each on Monday.
So far, Nigeria has won a total of 20 medals in weightlifting comprising 15 gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
The country won a total of 50 medals at the 2019 African Games with 16 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze medals.
The Nigerian Weightlifting Federation is optimistic that this record will be surpassed in Accra.
The weightlifting event holding at the University of Ghana, will end on March 15.
Nigeria is currently second on the overall medals table with 22 gold, 10 silver and 16 bronze medals.
Egypt top the table on 53 gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze medals.
Algeria is third with 18 gold, 23 silver and 25 bronze medals followed by South Africa in fourth on 18 gold, 17 silver and 31 bronze medals.
Hosts, Ghana are way down in 12th position with 1 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.
