The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has expressed concern about the safety of Nigerians residing in the country, particularly in light of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana on Wednesday.
In an advisory issued from the High Commission in Pretoria, the embassy raised awareness about potentially inflammatory online comments from some South African citizens, particularly targeting Nigerians.
These comments, largely influenced by the impending football match, include veiled threats related to “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” and intentions to “show pepper to Nigerians if Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.”
The High Commission urged the Nigerian community to exercise caution in their expressions, choose watch locations prudently, and avoid engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles emerge victorious.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining good conduct, the advisory encourages Nigerians to abide by the law before, during, and after the match.
In the event of provocations, the High Commission advises against reciprocation but instead encourages reporting such incidents to the appropriate authorities.
As Nigeria faces South Africa in the semi-final on Wednesday at 6 pm in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire, the advisory serves as a precautionary measure for the Nigerian community in South Africa.
