The wait for a new coach for the country’s senior men’s national team will soon be over as the Nigeria Football Federation NFF Technical Committee is set to meet next Tuesday in Abuja to decide on a new coach for the Super Eagles.
According to BSN Sports.com, the committee met last month and shortlisted seven coaches for the consideration of the NFF Executive Committee.
The shortlist includes former Nigerian internationals, Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke.
Former NFF president Amaju Pinnick has urged the Nigeria to allow George succeed Jose Peseiro, who he assisted at the recent African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The coach of Enyimba International led the Super Eagles to a 2-1 win over Ghana and a 2-0 loss to Mali in friendly matches in Morocco last month.
Domenec Torrent, a long-term assistant to Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, as well as former Cameroon coach Sergio Conceicao are among over 40 foreign coaches who applied for the Super Eagles coaching job.
Whoever the NFF decides on, the immediate task of the new coach will be the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers versus South Africa in Uyo and Benin Republic in Cote d’Ivoire between June 3 and 11.
The Super Eagles are third in Group C with two points after playing draws with Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November 2023.
South Africa are second on three points while Benin, now managed by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, have one point.
