The Eagles of Mali beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria for the first time in almost 50 years when they won an international friendly game 2-0 in Marrakech, Morocco, Tuesday night.
El Bilal Toure capitalised on a defensive blunder by Nigeria to put Mali ahead in the 18th minute.
Moses Simon and Cyriel Dessers both had two clear-cut chances later in the game to get Nigeria level but squandered them.
Kamory Doumbia then produced a moment of magic to seal the win for the Mali in the 86th minute.
The result is a first loss for Super Eagles interim manager Finidi George in two matches.
The Enyimba International coach won his first game which was also a friendly, beating Ghana 2-1 on Friday in Marrakech.
The last time Mali defeated Nigeria before this game was on the 5th of September 1975 in a friendly which ended 4-1.
The Supers Eagles were unbeaten in eight straight fixtures against the Malians, recording five wins and three draws.
Nigeria’s next two opponents in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June were also in action last night.
