A self-taught textbook on Mathematics titled ‘Make Yourself a Mathematician’ was on March 28th, 2023, launched.
The book, written by Dr. Fubara Dan-Jumbo and co-authored by Dr. Adetola Salau, and Mr. Nathaniel Longjohn aims to make mathematics more accessible and easier to learn for students.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Fubara Dan-Jumbo stated that the book was prepared to help students through hurdles poised by Mathematics.
He said: “any student, no matter your background in Mathematics, as long as you could just throw away the phobia that mathematics is a hard subject, pick up this book, and by the time you get to the fifth question in any of the lessons, you should be a master in it. That has been the aim of getting the book together.
Dr. Adetola Salau, Special Assistant on STEM Education in Lagos State also said: “Mathematics is the mother of every subject. It is because Mathematics is in everything. If you like to study nature, you will realize that God has patterns in everything. You will see numbers, you will see sequences everywhere.
“So it always fascinates me that no matter how much you try to run away from mathematics, somehow it will pull you back, and because of that we want to see how we want to create this culture, this mindset for our students.”
Mr. Nathaniel Long John added:”we want to encourage students in private and government schools to believe in themselves, every child is a born talent, but every child needs to work so as to harness the talent. And that’s what Mathematics does. It gives you the ability to sit down, to discipline yourself, to focus, because if you cannot sit down and focus, you cannot be good in mathematics. That’s what life requires. We need to sit, think, analyze and reason things through life.
Despite being an essential subject, many students struggle with mathematics. The book attempts to simplify mathematical concepts by relating them to real-life situations and making the learning process more engaging and interactive.
The book contains numerous examples, exercises, and practical applications that make learning mathematics more enjoyable and less intimidating. With “Make Yourself a Mathematician,” students can develop their problem- solving skills, logical reasoning, and critical thinking abilities, essential skills for success in many areas of life.
