Substitute Cauley Woodrow emerged as the hero, scoring in additional time to secure a dramatic victory for Luton against Everton in the FA Cup fourth round.
Everton’s Vitaliy Mykolenko inadvertently put the ball into his own net late in the first half, concluding a lackluster 45 minutes of football with few opportunities for both teams.
Boos from sections of their fans greeted Everton at half-time, but they found an equalizer early in the second half when Tim Krul’s goalkeeping error allowed Jack Harrison’s shot to slip under his body.
Despite leveling the score, Everton struggled to shift the momentum, and Luton created better chances, with Elijah Adebayo forcing a save and Carlton Morris having a shot cleared off the line.
As both teams aimed to avoid a replay, spaces opened up in the final minutes, and in the 96th minute, Woodrow capitalized on a goalmouth scramble, volleying in from close range after Everton failed to clear their lines from a corner.
This victory marks only the second time since 2012-13, when they were in the Conference Premier, that Luton has reached the FA Cup fifth round.
Meanwhile, in other matches, Joao Pedro’s hat-trick propelled Brighton past Sheffield United, and National League South side Maidstone United pulled off a stunning FA Cup upset, eliminating Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town in the fourth round.
