Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, found himself in a contentious situation as security operatives in Edo State arrested him a few days before the party’s primary election in the state.
The arrest, carried out by the Zone 5 police headquarters in Benin, Edo State, occurred on Wednesday.
The unfolding drama was accompanied by a crowd at the entrance, restricting access to police officers and a select group of VIPs.
Abure’s arrest reportedly resulted from a petition originating from the office of the Inspector General of Police in Abuja, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Viral videos and images captured the intense scene as police officers forcibly handled Abure while supporters from the Labour Party attempted to intervene and prevent his arrest.
The arrested party leader has been at odds with certain members of the party in the state, facing allegations of substituting candidates for the upcoming 2023 general election without obtaining the consent of the affected aspirants.
Despite these accusations, Abure has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
Tijani Momoh, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zone, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Benin City, shedding light on the complexities surrounding Abure’s arrest.
The unfolding events raise questions about the internal dynamics and controversies within the Labour Party in Edo State, adding an element of uncertainty to the upcoming primary election.
