Inter Milan clinched their 20th Italian Serie A title by beating arch-rivals and nearest challengers AC Milan 2-1 in a historic Derby della Madonnina at San Siro, Monday night.
Francesco Acerbi gave Inter Milan the lead in the 18th minute while Marcus Thuram smashed home the second in the 49th.
Fikayo Tomori pulled a goal back for AC Milan in the 80th minute to give then brief hope but they were unable to get the equaliser.
There were three red cards in injury time as tempers boiled over.
AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Inter’s Denzel Dumfries were sent off for their part in a brawl and Milan ended the game with nine men as captain Davide Calabria was sent off for violent conduct.
Inter players and coaches ran on to the pitch to celebrate at the final whistle at the ground both sides share, although Milan were the home side for this fixture.
The loss means sevond-placed AC Milan are 17 points behind Inter with five games to go.
This was the first time the Milan derby has decided the Serie A title in 116 years history of the fixture.
Inter Milan’s 20th Italian title takes them above AC Milan who have 19 and only below Juventus.
However, it is only their second title since 2010 after last winning it in 2021.
They have scored 79 goals this season, 15 clear of any other club and conceded only 18, eight fewer than any other side.
