The ongoing impeachment process involving the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, persists as the state House of Assembly announces its intention to pursue substituted service for delivering the impeachment notice.
Speaker Blessing Agbebaku conveyed this decision during Monday’s plenary, citing Shaibu’s refusal to acknowledge the impeachment notice sent via DHL courier service.
Consequently, the assembly plans to serve the notice through a publication in national dailies.
Last week, the Edo State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
The majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, revealed that a petition, endorsed by 21 out of 24 lawmakers, dated March 5, 2024, formed the basis for the impeachment.
Aiguobarueghian affirmed that the petition met the constitutional requirement of two-thirds support and was grounded in allegations of perjury and divulging Edo State government secrets.
The assembly’s decision to resort to substituted service reflects the ongoing complexities of this political development.
