The Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honorable Ekene Adams, has expressed disappointment over the delay in payment of allowances to the athletes who represented Nigeria at the 2023 African Games in Ghana.
Nigeria’s performance at the Games was impressive as they finished second on the medals behind Egypt with a total of 47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze medals.
Ekene who represents Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency said it is very sad that many of these athletes who made Nigeria proud in Ghana have not been paid their due allowances and bonuses.
He said he is shocked that up till now some of the athletes have not got their money insisting it is even more worrisome that they did not receive it before the Easter celebration.
Ekene said the country should be finding ways to motivate the athlete to excel at Olympic Games in Paris instead of owing them.
Honourable Ekene who is also a seasoned Sports Administrator pleaded with the Ministry of Sports Development to swiftly pay the athletes before the Sallah break.
He said no sports should be more prioritised than others and the athletes that did the nation proud in Ghana deserve their money even if they could not get a Presidential handshake.
