Comrade Salahudeen A. Lukman, a social critic and activist has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to do more in providing pallative to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Salahudeen, who is a former students union leader, said the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government by declaring a free education programme from primary to tertiary institution level. This, according to him, will make Tinubu tow the path of the late Obafemi Awolowo, whom he (Tinubu) is said to be a living version of.
He said in part, “these pallatives are indeed a welcome development but President Tinubu can do better by declaring a total free education programme from primary to tertiary institutions. This is not too much of an agitator of a renewed hope. It is an unwarranted tautology to analyze importance of education in national building.
“The best reinvestment of subsidy fund is to strengthen education system in Nigeria, when every child has access to free education, crime rate will drastically reduce as none will be idle.
“President Tinubu should be reminded that one bus per institution can’t meet up the population of students on transit likewise the students loan is not feasible as employment after graduation to guarantee repayment is not certain in Nigeria.
“Federal Government must desist from selective palliative and think of something general with long term effect as palliative for subsidy reinvestment going forward.”
