Former Brazil international Dani Alves, awaiting the verdict in his rape trial, is set to appear in court on Thursday, as announced by judicial sources.
The Barcelona court issued a statement indicating that all parties involved in the Alves case, including the defendant, are summoned for a “notification procedure” on February 22 at 10:00 am (0900 GMT).
While neither the court nor Alves’ lawyers confirmed the purpose of the appearance, Spanish media reports suggest it may be for the delivery of the verdict.
Alves, renowned for his illustrious career with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, faced charges related to an alleged rape at the Sutton nightclub in the early hours of December 31, 2022.
Throughout the trial, the complainant, whose identity remains protected, asserted that Alves forcibly engaged in sexual activity despite her pleas, causing distress and fear.
In contrast, the three-time Champions League winner maintained that the encounter was consensual, vehemently denying any accusations of rape.
Prosecutors are pushing for a nine-year jail sentence along with 10 years of probation, in addition to seeking 150,000 euros ($162,000) in compensation.
Alves, aged 40, has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest in January 2023, and the impending court appearance adds a significant chapter to the legal proceedings surrounding the former football star.
