The Confederation of African Football, CAF has insisted that the 15th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON will be hosted by Morocco in 2024 as planned.
According to Sports Gister, CAF Head of Television and Broadcasting, Commercial, Luxolo September, revealed this when he appeared as a guest on popular Supersport programme, Soccer Africa on Thursday.
Answering questions on when the biggest women’s football competition in Africa will hold this year, September said despite the uncertainty surrounding the staging of the tournament in Morocco, it will certainly hold within the year.
He said CAF is in constant discussions with the stakeholders to ensure that the competition does not suffer unnecessary delays.
There have been speculation that Morocco would not be able to host the WAFCON in 2024 as the country is also scheduled to stage the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025.
September explained that the 2024 FIFA football calendar did not align with the CAF calendar and the Olympic Games in Paris, France from July 26 to August 11 with two African teams participating also clashes with WAFCON plans but the continental football governing body is working round it.
He insists that the competition will not suffer any postponement, pointing out that CAF is aware of the crowded calendar and is working to ensure that the tournament is organised within the year in Morocco.
