The Nigeria Women Football League has announced Bayelsa State as the host of the 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six.
The end-of-season tournament which determines the winner of the championship is scheduled to run from Thursday the 16th to Sunday the 26th of May in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The state was confirmed as host by the NWFL on Tuesday following a review of bid interests from various states to stage the playoff competition.
NWFL Chairman, Nkechi Obi congratulated Bayelsa State for being selected as the hosts of the Super Six and said she hoped the opportunity will further boost women’s football in Bayelsa and raise the profile of the sport in Nigeria.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi explained that the Super Six will be played in a round-robin format, with each participating team playing five matches in the race for the title.
She said the participating clubs are expected to arrive in Yenagoa on Thursday the 16th of May while the draw and pre-match meeting will be held on Friday, the 17th of May from 10 am.
The playoff tournament will begin on Saturday, the 18th of May with Match-day One fixtures and end with the Match-day Five matches on Sunday, the 26th of May.
Three matches will be played on each Match Day, with breaks in between.
This is the first time that the NWFL Premiership playoff tournament will be hosted by Bayelsa State.
With holders Delta Queens missing out, six other teams will battle for the crown, having qualified as the top three teams from the two groups during the regular season.
The six teams are hosts, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels from Group B while Confluence Queens, Nasarawa Amazons and Heartland Queens qualified from Group A.
Nasarawa Amazons finished as Group A winners with 27 points from 14 matches, followed by Confluence Queens in second with 25 points Heartland Queens, third with 24 points.
Rivers Angels topped Group B with 27 points, four ahead of Edo Queens in second and Bayelsa Queens in third with 22 points.
The winner of this year’s Super Six will represent the country in the WAFU-B qualifiers to qualify for the 4th CAF Women’s Champions League.
