AC Milan has taken a significant stride in distancing itself from the historic San Siro, having acquired a 256,000 square metre plot in the San Donato municipality, situated 15 kilometers southeast of the current stadium.
The purchase marks a shift towards a new 70,000-seater stadium, pending discussions with San Donato officials and residents, which are set to reach a crucial phase next week for potential building permits.
This move comes after the initial plan to demolish the iconic San Siro and construct a shared stadium with Inter Milan was abandoned due to its designation as a site of “cultural interest.”
The existing San Siro, constructed in 1926, will host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics in 2026.
