Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman, and Ola Aina earned spots in the recently unveiled AFCON 2023 Team of the Tournament by CAF on Wednesday.
William Troost-Ekong, in addition to being named in the team, clinched the prestigious Man of the Tournament award, underscoring his pivotal role as Nigeria’s standout player.
His robust leadership skills both on and off the pitch, coupled with a stellar defensive performance, played a crucial role in guiding the Super Eagles to the final.
Ademola Lookman made a significant impact during the tournament, contributing crucial goals against formidable opponents like Cameroon and South Africa.
Similarly, Ola Aina showcased his defensive prowess, holding a stalwart position on the right side of the defense.
Surprisingly, despite being the African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen did not secure a spot on the team.
The selected roster includes tournament winners Franck Kessie, Jean Michael Seri, and Ghislain Konan in midfield and left-back, respectively.
The attacking lineup features EmilosNsua, the tournament’s highest goal-scorer, leading the line alongside DR Congo’s Yoane Wissa.
In goal, South African shot-stopper Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns earned recognition for his standout performance during a crucial penalty shoot-out against Cape Verde.
Taking the helm of the team is Ivorian Emerse Fae, who assumed leadership following the dismissal of Jean-Louis Gasset.
The AFCON 2023 Team of the Tournament thus reflects a blend of individual brilliance and collective achievement in the African football landscape.
