The Super Eagles of Nigeria are facing a setback in their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers campaign as their first-choice Left Back, Zaidu Sanusi, will be sidelined due to a major injury.
The unfortunate news was confirmed by FC Porto coach Sérgio Conceição during a post-match press conference after their 2-0 victory over Estrela da Amadora in a Liga Portugal tie on Saturday.
Sanusi, a key player for both FC Porto and the national team, is expected to miss the remaining matches of the season, including the crucial World Cup Qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June.
The injury occurred during the first half of the Liga Portugal tie when Sanusi complained about pain in his left knee and was subsequently stretchered off.
Conceicao expressed his sadness for the player, describing the injury as serious and confirming that it resulted from a clear foul.
The coach conveyed his belief that Sanusi’s season is effectively over, presenting a significant blow to both FC Porto and the Super Eagles.
To address the severity of the injury, Zaidu Sanusi will undergo surgery at a hospital in Porto in the coming days.
This unfortunate development raises concerns about the defensive lineup for the Super Eagles and adds a layer of challenge as they navigate through crucial qualifiers without their dependable left-back.
