The reign of Finidi George as Head Coach of the Super Eagles has ended less than two months after he was appointed as the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF has decided to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser to oversee the country’s senior men’s national team.
The decision was contained in a communiqué released by the NFF Communications Department on Thursday.
According to the communiqué, the NFF Executive Committee rising from a meeting held to deliberate on important issues, wholeheartedly apologised to Nigerians for the dismal performances of the Super Eagles in the first four matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The NFF assured Nigerians that they will put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad by employing an expatriate Technical Adviser in the coming weeks ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
Finidi came under criticism after the Super Eagles suffered an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Benin Republic on Monday on match-day 4 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with a disappointing three points out of a potential 12, following three draws and a loss to occupy 5th spot in Group C behind Rwanda, South Africa and Benin Republic who all have seven points and fourth placed Lesotho on five points.
According to reports, former international Finidi who was appointed on the 29th of April can continue to work under the new Technical Adviser if he so wishes or resign from the national team set up.
