The House Committee on Sports on Thursday refused to meet with members of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC who were led by vice president, Solomon Ogba because they failed to appear with their president, Engineer Habu Gumel.
Consequently, the House Committee issued a five-day ultimatum to Gumel to appear before it to explain to Nigerians the NOC level of preparation ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ogba told the Committee that Gumel had a sudden need to travel for a very important International Olympic Committee, IOC engagement.
This explanation did not go down well with the House Committee which is headed by Honourable Ekene Adams Abubakar and they insisted the NOC President must respect the voice of the Green Chamber to appear in person and not by proxy.
The House Committee Chairman said the president of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu is interested in the impact of sports on the country and demonstrated it at the one year anniversary celebration of his administration on Wednesday when he said he wants to take the country to the next level using sports which is a massive unifying factor in the country.
The House Committee Chairman insisted that because of this, they have to interface with the NOC to know how prepared they are in the build up to the Olympics but will only receive them when the President leads the delegation.
