Edo Queens have emerged Nigeria Women Football League champions for the first time ever after winning the NWFL Super 6 tournament in Yenagoa on Sunday.
The team played out a 1-1 draw with Bayelsa Queens Queens in their last game of the competition at the Samson Siasia Stadium to top the standings with 10 points from 5 games.
Emem Essien put Edo Queens ahead in the 29th minute while Zainab Olopade equalised for Bayelsa Queens in the 49th.
In another game which was played simultaneously in Nembe, Rivers Angels and Heartland Queens also settled for a 1-1 draw which ensured Edo Queens were crowned champions.
Rivers Angels who went into the game on 8 points from 4 games were on course to winning the tournament when Olamide Adugba gave them the lead in the 72nd minute.
However, substitute Emmanuella James got the equaliser for Heartland Queens in the 90th minute following a goalmouth scramble to ensure a share of the spoils.
The result meant Rivers Angels finished on 9 points from 5 games same as Bayelsa Queens enabling Edo Queens to nick the title with 10 points.
