Manager Thomas Tuchel is set to part ways with Bayern Munich at the conclusion of the current season, a year earlier than initially planned.
The 50-year-old, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023 on a contract until June 2025, will depart as part of what Bayern describes as “a sporting realignment.”
Tuchel achieved success in his debut season by securing the Bundesliga title for Bayern, but the team currently faces challenges, trailing eight points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen after consecutive defeats.
Notably, they suffered a 3-0 setback against Leverkusen and a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.
Bayern’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, stated that both parties agreed to “mutually end our collaboration” following an “open, good conversation.”
Tuchel, who has managed top clubs like Paris St-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, emphasized his commitment to achieving maximum success with Bayern until the end of the season.
Having won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, Tuchel faced a quarter-final exit in Europe last season with Bayern.
Despite the recent setbacks, his team clinched the Bundesliga title on the final day of the previous campaign, edging out Borussia Dortmund.
The acquisition of England captain Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial 100 million euros (£86 million) aimed at bolstering domestic and European prospects.
However, a challenging period, including a third consecutive defeat against Bochum, has seen Bayern slip in the Bundesliga standings and face the task of overturning a first-leg deficit against Lazio to remain in European competition.
