The 4×400 meters women’s relay team of Nigeria won the gold medal as the African Athletics Championships ended in Douala, Cameroon on Wednesday.
The quartet of Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph and Omolara Ogunmakinju clocked a time of three minutes, twenty seven point three-one seconds to finish ahead of Zambia and Botswana to win the gold.
It was Nigeria’s only gold medal on the final day of the 2024 African Athletics Championship.
Nigerian women’s 4x400m have now won two of the continental titles on offer in 2024.
They won both the African Games and African titles in the same season.
The time was not good enough to qualify Nigeria for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games though as the country needed to run faster than three minutes, twenty six point zero eight seconds to overhaul Cuba and qualify for the Olympics.
Unfortunately it was not to be as Nigeria missed out by over a full second.
