Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu, faced a potential setback in his athletic journey while representing his Turkish club, Trabzonspor, during a Turkish Cup quarterfinal match against an Istanbul club on Thursday.
Despite Trabzonspor clinching a 1-0 victory, with Edin Visca’s 57th-minute goal securing their spot in the semifinals, Onuachu’s participation was cut short in the 68th minute due to an injury, leading to his substitution by Enis Destan.
Following the match, Trabzonspor manager Abdullah Avci disclosed that Onuachu would undergo an MRI test to assess the severity of the injury.
Avci assured that the club would soon provide detailed information about the expected duration of Onuachu’s absence from the field.
This unfortunate incident adds Onuachu to the list of Nigerian football stars grappling with injuries, with the toll particularly noticeable just 19 days after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ola Aina, a defender for Nottingham Forest, has been sidelined due to injury since the conclusion of the tournament.
Additionally, Porto full-back Zaidu Sanusi is anticipating an approximately eight-month absence after sustaining an injury shortly after returning to his club.
Super Eagles Vice Captain, William Troost-Ekong, underwent surgery in Finland due to an injury suffered while representing Nigeria at the AFCON.
Onuachu, having amassed nine goals and three assists in 17 league games for Trabzonspor, is undoubtedly hoping for a swift recovery, aiming to minimize any potential extended absence from the pitch.
