Nigerian-born basketball superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo will on July 26 make history as the first black flagbearer for Greece at an Opening Ceremony when he walks in the parade of athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Born to Nigerian immigrants, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks legend, led the Greek men’s basketball team to victory in recent Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, securing their place at the Games.
He was the top scorer in the final as Greece overcame Croatia to book their spot in Paris.
He has twice been named Most Valuable Player in the NBA in 2019 and 2020 and won the NBA Finals MVP in 2021 when Milwaukee Bucks clinched the title.
Greece are in Group A at the Paris Olympics along with Australia, Canada and Spain who qualified on Sunday by beating the Bahamas.
Defending champions, the United States of America, as well as France, Germany, Japan, Serbia and South Sudan have already qualified.
France qualified as the host nation while the other seven teams qualified based on their finishes at the World Cup last summer.
